Description: This is a picture atlas of emergency veterinary procedures with clear, step-by-step photos to guide readers through the process. The previous edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a photographic guide to emergency procedures for busy veterinary practitioners.
Audience: It is intended for general veterinary practitioners who infrequently perform these procedures. Both authors are authorities on emergency and critical care procedures.
Features: The book covers basic emergency procedures (peripheral venous access, oxygen supplementation), along with more complicated procedures (thoracocentesis, nutritional techniques). It makes nice use of anatomic bone pictures in the intraosseous catheter section. It also covers not so common techniques such as urohydropulsion and temporary antepubic cystostomy catheters. The book has a wealth of very clear, step-by-step pictures that serve as a guide (along with written steps) to each procedure. Each section starts with a list of supplies needed. Online videos for many of the procedures accompany the book.
Assessment: This is an essential book for small animal practices, emergency clinics, and any place that teaches veterinary students, interns, or residents. The abundant images are of excellent quality. The second edition has all color pictures along with online videos of many of the procedures.
