About the Author

Sharon L. Crowell-Davis DVM, PhD, was one of the founding Diplomats of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. She has 27 years experience in the diagnosis and treatment of behavior problems in domestic and zoo animals and is currently a Professor at the University of Georgia.

Thomas Murray, BS, PhD, is Head of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, where he is also a Distinguished Research Professor with 24 years experience in psychopharmacology

Description: This book of veterinary psychopharmacology is an excellent reference on drugs for consideration for use in patients with behavioral problems.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide general practitioners with a resource to help them arrive at good decisions about drug selection and to better understand the drugs they are using. These are worthy objectives as animal behavioral problems are increasingly recognized as a major impediment to strong human-animal bonds and successful treatment of behavioral problems enhances quality of life of both people and animals. Very few drugs have been approved for veterinary psychopharmacology use, therefore limited information is available to guide veterinarians in the selection and use of these drugs. This book is an excellent reference.
Audience: Although written primarily for general practitioners, the book will also be of interest to students and residents. It includes information pertinent to the treatment of dogs, cats, horses, laboratory animals, rabbits, primates, and various species of birds. The authors are recognized as leaders in the fields of animal behavior (Drs. Crowell-Davis and Seibert) and pharmacology (Dr. Murray).
Features: The introduction provides an overview of factors to be considered when evaluating and managing veterinary patients with behavioral disorders. Chapter 2 provides an overview of neurotransmitters and their function in the brain and nervous system. The remaining chapters focus on the various categories of drugs used in psychopharmacology. These chapters provide information on the modes of action, indications, contraindications, side effects, and prescribing guidelines for drug classes and individual drugs within each class. Helpful features include the inclusion "important information for owners" and clinical examples. Extensive references are provided. Charts are used to indicate the relative costs for the various drugs. Illustrations include black-and-white drawings of the interrelationships of neurotransmitters and their receptors with various types of drugs.
Assessment: This is the most up-to-date book focusing on veterinary psychopharmacology. The only other book with similar content was published in 1998 and is now out of date: Dodman and Shuster, Psychopharmacology of Animal Behavior Disorders (Blackwell Science).
