Description: This is the second edition of a book that covers a wide variety of topics in small animal emergency and critical care including triage, CPR, common emergencies and pertinent pathophysiology, treatments, technical procedures, and compassion fatigue and burnout. It includes images, tables, graphs, and bulleted lists to facilitate learning. It also includes access to a related website that contains all of the images in the book in addition to multiple-choice quiz questions. of this title. The first edition was published in January 2011.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the author, is to provide veterinary paraprofessionals with a cutting-edge reference on the pathophysiology, epidemiology, signs, diagnosis, treatment, and general nursing techniques for the most common veterinary emergencies. Presenting the material in both print and online formats adds tremendous value in that each version will appeal to different readers. The website also offers review questions for those studying for boards.
Audience: The audience is all veterinary paraprofessionals, and the book would be very helpful for students and graduates alike. It is well organized and thorough. It would be extremely helpful for those studying for board exams. The book unique in that it is written for veterinary technicians by veterinary technicians. The author began as a licensed veterinary technician and obtained a dual VTS in both ECC and anesthesia/analgesia and is a certified veterinary pain practitioner. The international panel of contributors includes individuals in academia as well as specialty referral practices.
Features: The book covers a large variety of small animal emergency and critical care medicine topics. I particularly like that it reviews the physiology of each area related to the specific emergency. It is organized by broad topics and broken down into smaller, more specific topics. There are fantastic photos and illustrations included in the book, which are accessible on the website as well.
Assessment: This is a great addition to the library of books focusing on small animal emergency and critical care. It is comprehensive and thorough, covering a wide variety of topics, including compassion fatigue and burnout. The book is more practical than others I have read on this topic, and this update has several new chapters and expanded sections on individual diseases. I would highly recommend it to fellow veterinary technicians, especially those studying for boards.
