Gr 4-6-Marquette attempts to provide introductory overviews of these two lengthy conflicts. He describes the causes, most important events, and aftermath of each one, and also tries to explain their lasting effects on the United States. Unfortunately, these books will do little to help readers understand these very complex conflicts. They are so brief and the print size is so large (a full page of text has about 27 lines) that details about both people and events are extremely limited. Although Marquette is objective, his analyses are often simplistic. Vietnam has two errors; the time line mistakenly puts the Tonkin Gulf resolution in 1963, and the author asserts that all American troops left Vietnam in 1973, when the U.S. maintained a substantial troop presence to guard our interests and advise the South Vietnamese until Saigon fell in 1975. In the second book, Marquette covers Japanese aggression in Asia and the attack on Pearl Harbor in only five stilted sentences. Many other topics are given similar treatment or are omitted. Both books feature average-quality, full- and partial-page photos and illustrations, maps, and sidebars. Readers and researchers, especially those who lack background knowledge about these wars, will not be well served by these titles.-Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
