About the Author

When I walked into the recruitment station to join the Marines at seventeen, I heard someone behind me yell, “What the hell are you doing in my passageway? Get your ass in here!”

It turned out that the Marines were out to lunch, and the Navy recruiter was eating at his desk. I ended up taking the Navy’s vocational ability test and had high hopes on becoming a tug boat crew member. I had seen a few Miller beer commercials and thought the idea of sailing into New York harbor at dusk with my friends looked like fun.

Unfortunately, I did too well on the Navy tests, and they had me take a foreign language aptitude test. Before I knew it, I had completed boot camp, and was on my way to learn Spanish at the Department of Defense’s Foreign Language Institute at the Presidio of Monterey in California. Upon graduation, I attended the United States Air Force School of Applied Cryptologic Science.

I spent the next three years at was then Homestead Air Force Base in Florida. At Homestead my primary focus was the Island of Cuba. By then, I was about eighteen and already had a Top Secret SCI clearance. During my time in that role, I had the opportunity to meet Bay of Pigs veterans of the Alpha 66 Brigade and probably a few Castro sympathizers in CORU.

Many years later, I was poolside in San Francisco, while listening to the Buena Vista Social Club on my MP3, and as I listened to the songs, the following story just came to me. I jotted it down when I got home. Over the course of about six months, I wrote this in my spare time. In essence just putting flesh on the bones. I wrote it more out of personal satisfaction than any commercial interest. Yesterday the thought occurred to me to format the screenplay for Barnes & Noble.

It’s just a fun romance set in revolutionary Cuba, inspired by the songs of the Buena Vista Social Club on a lazy summer afternoon in San Francisco, California.
