Description: This book provides a thorough grounding in the rationale for, and procedures involved in, manipulating the viscera. It begins with the scientific background of the progenitors who developed these procedures: Barral, Finet and Williame, Kuchera. and Chapman. Once that is done, the book examines individual organ systems, looking at anatomy, physiology, pathology, and osteopathic examination and treatment, accompanied by ample high-quality illustrations. This is an English-language version of an established and well-received book originally published in German in 2003.
Purpose: It is devoted to a discussion of manipulation of the viscera, an osteopathic concept that remains largely restricted to that profession. It builds upon the work of notable osteopaths such as Chapman (who was instrumental in reflect technique) and the work of Kuchera and Kuchera, who refined the treatments presented in this book. It acknowledges the work of Barral in ensuring acceptance of these procedures in Europe, and it is now timely to bring them to the attention of American manual therapists.
Audience: This is directed predominantly at those in the osteopathic profession and is based on the work of leading osteopaths working with visceral manipulation. Students will find it a boon, and it may also find an audience among those in the chiropractic profession. The author is well known for his work in this field.
Features: The first quarter of this book spends much of its time laying out the practical, scientific, and theoretical basis for the procedures covered in the latter part of the book. It begins by showcasing the work of Barral and his mechanical perspective of the organs, which he developed to parallel what the osteopathic profession believes to occur in the parietal joints. It then looks at the work of Finet and Williame, who developed rules of organ movement and which could be invoked to aid physiological mobility of the organ. The Kucheras focused on the circulatory system, and Chapman on the neural reflex, all related to the viscera. By developing this context, it makes it easier to understand the nature of the treatments which are offered in the remaining three-quarters of the book. Each chapter looks at anatomy, physiology, and pathology and then offers mainly manual approaches to organ manipulation. And to a significant degree, the book presents its information clearly and succinctly. If I have any complaint, it is that the chapters are not referenced per se, although there is a general bibliography.
Assessment: This is an interesting and incisive book which may find a new audience here in the U.S. It works from established osteopathic contexts, and the material it presents is easy to follow and apply. This is a somewhat marginalized area, and one perhaps not well understood outside of osteopathy, but works such as this may help bring these procedures to a wider audience.
