Description: This is the second edition of a book originally published in 2010 that discusses the development of the visual system, the diagnosis of visual problems during childhood, and how to treat and manage various visual diagnoses. This edition includes access to an ebook version.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive guide to treating and managing children with visual problems. A child cannot fully develop without an appropriately functioning visual system, and this book provides knowledge and resources for how to help improve the visual system. This is a monumental book given the topics it covers, and it should be mandatory reading for every eyecare provider.
Audience: The audience includes eyecare providers, both optometrists and ophthalmologists. However, the book is not limited to just them; it is also useful for any therapist who works with children. It is an excellent reference that should be in every clinic where pediatric patients are seen. The authors are three pediatric and binocular vision professors at two of the nation's leading optometry schools, and the list of contributors is essentially a "who's who" of experts in this field.
Features: The three parts of the book cover the development of the eyes and visual system and the normal and abnormal development of a child, how to examine all aspects of the visual system, and how to treat any diagnosed conditions. This division essentially mimics how a doctor sees a patient: they must have the background knowledge of development and what is normal versus abnormal, know how to perform and modify a comprehensive exam given what the patient presents with or what the doctor discovers, and decide how to begin treating and managing any diagnosed conditions. In particular, the chapter about treating strabismus is phenomenal. It discusses strabismus from a very cutting-edge scientific standpoint, and it presents progressive treatment options that are in line with what the most advanced clinics across the country are doing, rather than rehashing the same traditional treatment options that are presented in textbooks published decades ago.
Assessment: This is a work of art that should be in the personal library of every optometrist and ophthalmologist. Historically, there have been a few books in this area (Pediatric Optometry, Rosner (Butterworth Heinemann, 1982), Clinical Pediatric Optometry, Press and Moore (Butterworth-Heinemann, 1993)), but this book is the most comprehensive and up to date one on the market. As discussed in the book, vision does not develop in isolation, so it is necessary to continuously update our references as we learn more about human and visual development and as new treatment modalities are discovered. The authors have done just that with this magnificent book.
