Overview

It's 1876 and Dr. Viveca Lancaster is frustrated by the limits placed upon female physicians of color. When she is offered the chance to set up a practice in the small all-black community of Grayson Grove, Michigan, she leaves her California home and heads east. The very determined Viveca knows all about fighting for her rights. But she may need more than determination to face down the distractingly handsome Nate Grayson, the Grove's bull-headed mayor.

Nate Grayson goes to the train station expecting Dr. V. Lancaster to be a man. But when the lovely, dark-skinned Viveca introduces herself, he is at first speechless, then orders her back on the train and out of his town! It's 1876 and women aren't supposed to be doctors, men are. However, Nate isn't prepared for this extraordinary beauty's stubbornness and fire, nor for the vivid way she heals-then steals-his heart.

Contains mature themes.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"With an interesting and often unexpected plot, well-defined characters, and unexpectedly sharp dialog, this historical is an example of Jenkins's mastery." ---Library Journal Audio Review

Library Journal - Audio

12/01/2014
Viveca "Vivid" Lancaster, a beautiful and unconventional physician who is both female and black, arrives in a small Michigan town in 1876 to open a practice. Mayor Nate Grayson is unconvinced that she has the grit to serve his community but is soon overwhelmed by Vivid's ability to meet every challenge, even that of his own damaged heart. Jenkins (Heart of Gold) has already made her mark as one of the best writers in today's romance genre, over and above her position as a leader in African American fiction. With an interesting and often unexpected plot, well-defined characters, and unexpectedly sharp dialog, this historical is an example of Jenkins's mastery. Unfortunately, Robin Eller's overly slow and deliberate performance isn't up to the standard set by Jenkins's prose. VERDICT Despite minor performance flaws, this audiobook belongs in both general romance and African American collections.—Janet Martin, Southern Pines P.L., NC
