Overview

Notwithstanding the rapid urbanisation and massive explosion of media in the country Rural Press constitutes one of the most important, viable and effective means of communication for reaching out to the hundreds of million people in a country like India, which still continues to have a strong rural, social and economic base. Rural Press is a promising medium for disseminating information and knowledge about improved farm practices, nutrition and health, and development plans to the sections of society where information is needed most. Keeping in view the importance of Rural Press, AMIC-lndia, with support from FES organised a series of three seminars in the country during 1994. These seminars provided a suitable opportunity to the AMIG members, media practitioners and other participants to deliberate on various aspects of the Rural Press. These papers have been put together in this book for wide dissemination and use by teachers of journalism, media practitioners and all others interested in rural press development. It is hoped that this endeavour should be useful for all those interested in programmes in the areas of rural development, empowerment of rural women and development journalism.
