Overview

Jamie loves the zoo. But the zoo is worn out. If a special city-wide vote doesn't pass, the zoo will have to close. Will Jamie and her friends' campaign be able to save the zoo?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature Comprehensive Database

The town is facing a crisis. The zoo needs to be refurbished, and it will cost four million dollars. When Jamie and her friends learn about that, they decide to try and help, even though they cannot vote. They create signs and posters to campaign to save the zoo. Then, they go to the town council meeting and learn the reality of the city’s other needs—an expansion of the library, a soccer field, and a firehouse. Jamie realizes that there are many needs, and not all of them can be met. The decision will be made by the residents of the city, who will cast their ballots as to whether or not money should be spent on the zoo. In a way, Jamie is sad, because when the votes are tallied, the campaign to save the zoo fails. The animals will be moved to a better place, but it will be further away for the kids; however, Jaime has learned much about politics and campaigning and will put that knowledge and experience to good use as she runs for class vice president. There is a seven word glossary, a list of other books to read, and safe web sites provided by FactHound. Part of the “Read-It Readers: Social Studies: Elections” series, this green level title also contains a secret ballot activity.
