Walls of Iron
Hiram Grice is a 17-year-old clerk to Confederate Secretary of the Navy Mallory when he begins researching the concept of iron warships. Convincing the Secretary that iron armor is the way to offset Union naval superiority, he goes on to become a trusted adviser and a valued consultant in the construction of the South's most powerful ships. In addition to dealing with problems of severe shortages that consistently plague his efforts, Hiram must compete with his most dangerous enemy for the affection of his lifelong love. In the meantime, Charles Coulter, an experienced riverboatman from Iowa, serves aboard the ironclad USS Carondelet that carries the war deep into the vitals of the Confederacy along her western rivers. In addition to the horrors of war, Charles contends with the betrayal of a friend and a personal vendetta waged by a bloodthirsty rebel guerilla. Together, Hiram and Charles are forced to grow and develop beyond the boundaries of ordinary men as they face extraordinary times.
