Library Journal - Audio

In this live theater recording, set in 1941, Sara returns to the opulent Washington, DC, home of her mother, Fanny, after 17 years in Europe. She is accompanied by husband Kurt and their three children. Kurt, who has been actively fighting fascism, is carrying money to fund antifascist activities. He must return to Europe to attempt to free a jailed antifascist leader, but he is delayed by a blackmail threat made by self-exiled aristocrat Teck de Brancovis, who is also staying in Fanny's home. The play says much about the manners, customs, and prejudices of the times as well as about love, loyalty, and family legacy. This is a top-notch production by a professional theater company recorded in a live performance. VERDICT As good as it gets without attending live theater.—Cliff Glaviano, formerly with Bowling Green State Univ. Libs., OH

MARCH 2018 - AudioFile

Set in Washington, DC, before the United States entered WWII, Lillian Hellman's incisive drama about national identity, personal freedom, and responsibility is fully realized by a talented, cohesive ensemble. After nearly 20 years, wealthy matriarch Fanny Farrelly welcomes the return of her daughter, Sarah, along with Sarah's German husband and children. The reunion is ill-fated, however, thanks to Fanny's Romanian houseguests. The story unfolds seamlessly as the nimble cast responds to the sharp, and often funny, dialogue. With her brassy voice and patrician air, Susan Sullivan is superb as Fanny, while Adam Wylie, as a precocious boy, serves as the ultimate foil. The combined efforts of the cast make for a compelling, and startlingly relevant, listen. A.S. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine
