What We Reckon
Meet Jack Jordan. He's a smooth-talking con artist with a penchant for the fast life. He's snuck into Lufkin, Texas, in the dead of night with little more than a beat-up Honda, a hollowed-out King James Bible full of cocaine, and enough emotional baggage to sink a steamship. He's charming, dedicated, and extremely paranoid. Summer Ashton is his partner-in-crime. She's stuck by him through thick and thin, but lately, her mind has begun to slip. They've told their fair share of lies, and she's having a devil of a time remembering what's the truth. And recently, she's been hearing voices. Unfortunately for both of them, she's the brains of the operation. Furthermore, they have begun to tire of one another. For these two career grifters, the sleepy East Texas countryside is but another pit stop on their rampage across the American South. Will it be their last?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

11/20/2017
Drug-addled grifters Jack Jordon and Summer Ashton, as they call themselves in Pruitt’s zany, frightening, gritty third Southern noir novel (after 2015’s Hashtag), shed their names and assume new identities every time one of their drug deals goes horribly wrong. They head for Lufkin, Tex., where they plan on scoring big time with the kilo of cocaine Jack has secreted in a hollowed-out Bible. With each change of territory, they “leave their burdens behind” with the certainty that from now on everything will be “roses and sunshine.” Jack and Summer share a commitment to each other based on two simple rules: “cops are the bad guys and we never tell them shit” and “no hospitals... to go to the emergency room is to go to jail.” In Lufkin, the pair encounter drugged-out college boys, a well-intentioned guru, and a platoon of lost teenagers looking for certainty where there is none. The plot rambles, and what happens to the cocaine doesn’t matter much. Assured prose carries the reader along to the shattering and enigmatic ending, which will leave many wondering what really happened earlier in the book—and what will happen in the next installment. (Oct.)

From the Publisher

"Hardboiled honey packed with razor blades and dynamite, strange and leanly written, and tossed into a tornado; WHAT WE RECKON is the insane love child of James Cain and Jim Thompson, a modern piece of folk lore covered in gasoline and set on fire. This baby rocks like a motel bed during a cheap honeymoon. You need it." —Joe R. Lansdale, author of HAP & LEONARD and HONKY TONK SAMURAI
“Pruitt delivers an excellent addition to the gritty Southern noir genre. Readers of Hunter S. Thompson and David Joy will enjoy the psychedelic twists and turns as well as the rapid-fire dialog.” Library Journal(Starred Review) "Assured prose carries the reader along to the shattering and enigmatic ending.” Publishers Weekly "I'd tell you to remember the name Eryk Pruitt, but after you read WHAT WE RECKON, it'll be impossible to forget. This is Southern noir prepared just the way you like it: Boiled hard, gritty as hell, and aimed straight at your heart." —Rob Hart, author of THE WOMAN FROM PRAGUE and NEW YORKED
