Read an Excerpt

Five years pass, and you become a great hunter. You don’t have a home yet. Instead, you travel and explore. You spend your days with other eagles your age.

Your head feathers become fully white. Your beak becomes yellow. You’re an adult, and it’s almost time to start a family.

* * *

When you’re eight years old, you choose a mate. Together, you must build a place to live. Should your nest be high in a tree? It’s safer up there. Or is it better to live low to the ground? That way, you’re closer to food. What will you do?

Build the nest high?
or
Build the nest low?

Choose one. Then go to the next page.

* * *

Oh, no! If eagle eggs are too close to the ground, other animals—like raccoons—could eat them. You’ll build a nest high in a tree, using sticks, pine needles, and grass. Did you make the right choice?
