Overview

Ever since Herbie Jones had to be Annabelle's partner in the class dance contest, he's been acting weird, even going to the library instead of going fishing with his best friend, Raymond. Lucky for Herbie, Raymond is determined to get to the bottom of this mess.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly

School troubles, girl troubles and birthday party troubles are met with antic aplomb by an irrepressible third grader. Ages 8-12. (June)

School Library Journal

Gr 3-5 Ray cannot understand why his best friend Herbie wants to spend time with Annabelle Louisa Hogdekiss, and is alarmed to discover that Herbie has the dreaded G (Girl) Disease. Fortunately, Herbie's infatuation with Annabelle lasts only a day and a halfalthough she is not ready to give up so quickly. This humorous realistic novel concludes with Herbie's triumphant victory over Annabelle in the third-grade boy-versus-girl spelling bee, ending their brief romance for good. Short chapters, large type, and a number of full-page drawings make this easy-to-read school story a good choice for readers seeking more on the level of Cleary and Hurwitz. This is a sequel to Herbie Jones (Putnam, 1985) but it is not necessary to have read the first to appreciate the on-target humor in this one. Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, Conn.
