About the Author

Charles Sumner (1811-1874) was an American abolitionist, Radical Republican, and Senator from Massachusetts. A lawyer and passionate opponent of slavery, Sumner served in the Senate for nearly twenty-five years, working to advance the abolitionist cause against slavery. He was nearly beaten to death on the floor of Senate in 1857 by congressman Preston Brooks, a nephew of a fellow senator mocked by Sumner. He recovered and was instrumental in formulating northern Reconstruction policy during and after the Civil War.
