About the Author

Bob Raczka is the author of four seasonal books: Snowy, Blowy Winter; Spring Things; Summer Wonders; and Who Loves the Fall? He lives in the Chicago area with his family and dog.

Judy Stead has worked as a teacher, graphic designer, art director, illustrator, author, and painter. She's illustrated more than a dozen children's books including Snowy, Blowy Winter and Best Friends on Wheels. She lives with her family in North Carolina where her "treetop" studio overlooks some of Mother Nature's wildest work.

In catchy rhyme, Raczka celebrates the smells, tastes, holidays, experiences, and changes in nature that make the fall special. Children jump in leaf piles, birds migrate, bears hibernate, a father bakes an apple pie, kids play football and soccer, young tricksters dress up for Halloween, and an extended family shares a Thanksgiving feast. Besides the usual seasonal fare, the author introduces corn-crop reapers, bonfire builders, "former caterpillars" (monarch butterflies), and "helicopters" (whirling maple keys). For those unfamiliar with maple trees, the helicopter reference may be confusing, but it is clarified in the "Fall Facts" on the final page. The brightly colored, well-designed illustrations pulsate with energy, movement, and charm. They feature multicultural characters who often assume nontraditional roles, such as the girl who plays football. Curiously, Stead painted her monarch butterflies yellow and black with only traces of orange instead of the usual orange and black. Nevertheless, this is a strong choice for units on fall, one that will prompt discussions about why children love the season.

There is a lot to love about the fall, as readers can see in this action-packed, rollicking book of noun-oriented rhyme. Cheerful children and adults of various races as well as a number of friendly-looking animals demonstrate all one can become in autumn. For example, "Quilters, choppers, / helicopters. Winged migrators, / hibernators." Inventive nouns present the actions, while Stead's colorful, stylized illustrations in a seasonally appropriate palette faithfully and energetically depict them. Soccer, school, harvest, pie-making, leaf-raking, apple- and pumpkin-picking and animal behaviors and sounds are all covered, along with prerequisite holidays such as Thanksgiving and Halloween. The same team has already produced the chipper Spring Things (March 2007), which focuses on verbs, and one suspects that summer and winter, along with other parts of speech, will not be far behind. Overall, a vivid and lively introduction to the season that preschoolers will particularly enjoy. Includes a page of fall facts that defines the more advanced vocabulary words and presents some general information about the season. (Picture book. 4-6)
