Overview

Can an individual turn the pain of a troubled childhood into a recipe for success as an adult?

In Who’s in the Waiting Room?, Neal Goldstein tells his own story of going from high school dropout to lawyer, a dramatic transformation that he achieved by tapping into the power of relationships. Alongside his journey of self-discovery, Neal presents five behaviors anyone can adopt to foster quality relationships: find your people, acknowledge the need for each other, listen more than you talk, recognize the value of face-to-face contact, and find common ground. He explains how the pain of his youth became his power and offers actionable success moves to help anyone recognize how strengthening relationships in their own lives can lead to success and satisfaction.

About the Author

At sixteen, NEAL GOLDSTEIN dropped out of high school. It was the last in a long line of defeats for an underprivileged boy, self-raised, in a tumultuous home with an abusive father and a disabled mother. Neal did the only thing he could think to do: quit dreaming of a future, get a job, and look after his mom as well as he could.

Once Neal was able to find the genuine relationships he was searching for, he allowed himself to take the courageous steps of getting his high school equivalency diploma. Now, Neal Goldstein is a partner at the law firm of Goldstein and Bashner and lives with his wife Gina on Long Island. They have four children: Matt, Sari, Jessica, and Lana. He loves traveling, bicycle riding, and walking on the boardwalk in his hometown in his free time.

What People are Saying About This

From the Publisher

“I had the opportunity to work with Neal as a psychotherapist many years ago. Neal’s book is a brave, vulnerable, authentic sharing of a very deprived, difficult, and painful childhood. Yet, through sheer resilience, intelligence, and perseverance, Neal managed to survive and find love and success in his adult life. The book is aimed at young people facing extraordinary adversity and struggling to find a path to move forward in their lives. What is unique about this book is that while telling his deeply moving story, he also provides hope and tools to navigate through it. A truly inspiring book!”
—Ellen March Feinstein LCSW

“Neal Goldstein is a lawyers’ lawyer. He has been a wonderful mentor to me and hundreds of other lawyers across the country. In his book, Neal captures that shared wisdom in his stories about his challenging life and successful career. Every new lawyer should read this book!”
—Jim Hacking
Cohost of the Maximum Lawyer Podcast and Immigration Lawyer

“Far from just writing another self-help book, Neal Goldstein takes us into a world of despair and confusion and shows us what it takes to come out the other side. I found my heart breaking for the young boy abandoned by family and thrown unprepared into the caretaker role, only to catch myself later applauding and celebrating the thoughtful, caring, and strong man who had emerged. By weaving deeply personal and relatable stories together with general principles for success and happiness, Neal provides the reader with a strong foundation for growth that we all can relate to and, more importantly, that we can all learn from.”
—Arnie Preminger
Founder and CEO, Sunrise Association: international summer and year-round programs for children with cancer and their siblings

“Neal Goldstein is one of the most thoughtful, genuine lawyers. He has spent his career connecting with clients, colleagues, and opposing counsel to build a personal and professional network that is truly awe-inspiring. Neal’s book shares his insight into creating deeply personal and professional connections that have led to a rich and fulfilling career. Neal is a treasure, and the read is a joy.”

“I was sitting in a room full of young, old, and eager lawyers, all trying to find their way through the business aspect of their law firms. We went around the room telling our stories and how we got here. Finally, it was Neal’s turn to address the room. A visibly nervous man stood up and started to make remarks about his childhood. All eyes and ears were on him. Nobody moved or made a sound. He described having to leave high school to take care of his mother and family. What I heard was the most humble, honest, and self-reflective story. I simply cannot describe what was going through my mind, hearing such a tremendous story and knowing the endurance, humility, and determination it must have taken to get to where Nealis today. This surreal moment changed my thinking and humbled me to no end. We immediately struck up a personal relationship. Once again, I am so humbled by reading Neal’s new book. It is a true story of a real man that we all aspire to be. This is a book and story you must have your children read—a true lesson on a life that will effect change in your life.”
Harlan Schillinger

Michael Mogill

“It’s no surprise that this book, at its core, is about relationships. I’ve known Neal for many years, and the gift of this book is that, through the stories of his life, he is able to help others through his compassion and wisdom. His counsel and suggestions ask the reader to look within themselves to build on old relationships and create new ones. This book will help people take the necessary steps to have more successful business and personal lives.”
Ernest Mingione
Actor and Lawyer

“Our ability to connect with others is the ultimate measure of our success. Building authentic and meaningful connections—that’s Neal’s passion. This is what he does so well. Neal and I are both lawyers. We share the same last name but are not related. Other than that, we are both humans trying to make the world a better place. I met Neal at a professional event and instantly knew that he and I would stay in touch and be friends for life. This ability to connect is Neal’s gift. I knew that Neal had a tough time growing up. But the early pages of this book are genuinely heartbreaking. All children deserve to feel loved, nurtured, and safe. From this troubled upbringing, Neal found his calling and developed. Instead of becoming bitter, he developed a warmth, grace, and humility that makes him easy to connect with. Neal’s journey, in this book, is indispensable for anyone looking to understand how to build relationships—real human connections.”
Joshua Goldstein
Goldstein Immigration Lawyers, Los Angeles

“I have known Neal for my entire adult business life. My relationship with Neal has changed the course of my journey, and I find it difficult to think about where I would be today without him. However, reading his book has provided me with insights that I never knew, things to think about (especially about myself) that I would not have thought about, and pure hope and joy about life. Life is truly a journey about learning, and Neal’s message finds a way to guide us all to have a better life. One thing that stands out to me is the timelessness of Neal’s message. In today’s online world, with connectivity,’ it is amazing how many people feel disconnected. The facade of social media hides more profound challenges for people, even you or me—challenges no different than what Neal has traveled.“Thank you to Neal for bringing this to light—for truly, it is not about what you know, but who you know and how you relate in the world!”
Brian Mittman, Esq.
