Overview

This is brief essay criticism of Bill Cosby's bizarre comments. It charts how he went from being a beloved comedian and "America's dad" to a fringe character who, despite his good intentions, comes across as a loon. Cosby favors superficial changes over addressing the larger problems of the black community, with humor that largely misses the mark. Whether Cosby is a fearless truth teller or “airing the dirty laundry” of black America is secondary to his pompous attitude and detachment from the real life of the average African American.

Author update: This year America saw a young black man named Trayvon Martin fatally shot during an incident instigated by no better reason other than him being a young black man in the suburbs. As of this writing, it is impossible to say what exactly transpired in Martin’s last few minutes of life, and whether he first attacked George Zimmerman or vice versa. Bill Cosby blames the teen’s baggy pants.

About the Author

Author, photographer, filmmaker, riverboat gambler, typer of biographies, J. Richard Singleton has established himself as one of the great thinkers of his but none other's time. He was a dual major in college, political science and English, where he wrote for his college newspaper. In high school, he wrote a little screenplay (okay, it's 134 pages), "Thugs," which was recently declared a finalist in both the WriteMovies.com screenwriting contest and the American Accolades screenwriting contest. When he isn't writing screenplays, novels and essays, he enjoys drinking whiskey and shooting at stray dogs that come onto his property.
