Overview

The debut EP from South Korean boy band BoyNextDoor, 2023's Why... showcases the group's breezy, upbeat style of pop. Produced by the group's KOZ label owner Zico, the album follows the group's single album Who! and hits many of the hip-hop and electronic dance elements that K-pop is known for, but with broader stylistic and instrumental palettes. Cuts like the opening "But I Like You" and "Serenade" feature crisply strummed acoustic guitars, keyboards, and lively analog drumbeats, all of which evoke an exuberant blend of early-2000s pop-punk crossed with the genre-defying pop savvy of bands like the 1975. There's also the bright reggae pop of "But Sometimes" and the romantic club-soul of "Crying." With Why..., BoyNextDoor have crafted an immediately distinctive and likable debut EP that pushes them to the top of the K-pop class of 2023. ~ Matt Collar
