Survival in the early 1900s is a struggle for nearly everyone. African Americans living in the United States, find it difficult at best. But for those trying to survive in the deep south, agonizing is the word that describes it more than any other. Unrelenting poverty, social injustice, fear, the absence of educational opportunities, the threat of lynching, and the stressors of day-to-day living make survival almost impossible.
