Description: Citing the large number of newly diagnosed cases of malignant lymphoid diseases every year as well as the number of deaths resulting from neoplasms originating in the lymphoid progenitor cells, the authors justify this book, derived from Williams Hematology, 9th edition, Kaushansky et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2016), the classic treatise on hematology.
Purpose: Three recent developments motivated the authors of the main textbook to bring out this new book: an expanded classification of the lymphocytic neoplasms by the World Health Organization, advances in the understanding of the biology and genetics of these tumors, and advances in the therapeutic approaches to the lymphomas and lymphocytic leukemias. Thus, the main purpose is to highlight these new advances so that readers can benefit from them in their research and clinical practice.
Audience: The primary audience is hematologists/oncologists seeing patients with these diseases. However, general practitioners and trainees, as well as investigators, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students in lymphoma and leukemia research also will find this book very helpful.
Features: Each of the 21 chapters is written by leading experts and is carefully updated by the original authors to include the latest developments. Each chapter includes a very clear and succinct summary of what is to follow. The chapters typically include important and specific information such as disease etiology, disease overview, epidemiology, initial workup, laboratory findings, prognosis, and therapeutic approaches. The use of different colors in headings and subheadings makes it easy to search for information one is looking for or even for casual readers trying to gain new information and knowledge. The appropriate use of tables and color illustration further enhances the quality of the content.
Assessment: This timely, concise, yet comprehensive book is an excellent addition to a hematologist/oncologist's collection. However, general practitioners, fellows, trainees, and researchers at all levels interested in lymphomas and lymphocytic leukemias also should find it very useful.
