Description: Intended to provide concise, authoritative summaries of a broad range of ocular conditions, this book includes excellent algorithms to create a differential diagnosis from various ocular signs, such as "choroidal folds" and "cotton wool spots." It also includes a link to an associated online photograph library.
Purpose: The authors wanted to produce a starting point of updated clinical information in a concise format.
Audience: The book is intended for ophthalmologists at all stages of training, internists, general practitioners, and ER physicians. However, the book's audience is more likely ophthalmology residents.
Features: The first park of the book is a set of algorithms that start from an ocular sign (such as dry eye syndrome) and then helps readers ask appropriate questions and examine for specific associated signs to produce a differential diagnosis. This part of the book is the most useful for residents, and it presents a well-structured approach to clinical conditions. The second part is a concise summary of over 300 ocular conditions (from Lowe syndrome to posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy), with subsections on basics, diagnosis (history and physical exam), treatment, ongoing care, references, and even ICD codes. While this part is admirably concise and discusses far more topics than the well-regarded related book (The Wills Eye Manual: Office and Emergency Room Diagnosis and Treatment of Eye Disease, 6th edition, Gerstenblith and Rabinowitz (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2012), the lack of clinical photographs in this section make for a difficult read. It seems likely that if residents had five minutes to start to learn a topic, they would find it easier if the color clinical photographs were displayed with the text in the book, instead of having to go to a separate website.
Assessment: While the algorithms and text summaries are excellent, the delivery could use an improvement. A more practical and easily accessible method of "5-minute" access would be a smartphone app, or smaller book that residents or fellows could carry in their coat pocket. Moreover, it would be much easier to learn the topics if the associated color photographs were included in the book, instead of being available only in a separate online library.
