About the Author

Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan Jan. 3 1932 on the lower west side, an area of immigrants, their descendants and people working hard to make a living and raise their children.
Growing up as a child I took any job available to earn nickels and dimes.
When I became aware as a child in grade school that the Grand Rapids Herald an, evening newspaper were sold on downtown street corners and papers boys could earn money as late night vendors I decided to give it a try.
We had to buy our first newspapers as the sales outlet closed after all the boys had acquired their papers for the night. You had to sell your papers or take the loss so buying to many papers was a bad venture, and not enough on a good night was not favorable with newspaper sales.
We learned at an early age to sell the correct amount for that night. Walking from the Grand Rapids west side downtown to pick up papers, sell them and return was no easy chore for a boy who was still in grade school.
It was while waiting to pick up papers that I watched the more seasoned paperboys who had the best corners and made the most nickels and dimes play street corner dice.
Being inquisitive and adventurous I thought I would do well to play the game with my nickels and dimes. This also gained favor with the older kids. I soon learned that street corner dice could earn as much as selling papers. Dice games took place before we went out on our paper routes for the night.
I learned at an early age that after the point number came out. Some kids would take my no pass bet at even money. Nickels and dimes of course and I did quite well. I always had the seven against any number. The point number had to come up twice for them to win against my no pass seven. I also learned in a hurry that a kid could make a run of several numbers as we called it and I would switch bets from no pass, to the pass line number.
This procedure was not observed by the average paper boy and it wasn’t long before I had a pocket full of nickels & dimes prior to us going out in our paper route.
“THEY CALLED ME LUCKY.”
