Young Dexter Green falls in love, while still a teenager, with a rich and beautiful maiden, Judy Jones. He attends a famous university, plays golf on the courses of St. Paul, becomes a prominent businessman and succeeds in winning the woman he loves, but the love lasts only a month: the woman he has loved so much has now lost all her beauty, and this loss is the loss of his "winter dreams." Set against the backdrop of the Roaring Twenties, the story explores themes of ambition, unrequited love, and the disillusionment that accompanies the pursuit of the American Dream.
