Description: This is the second edition of an atlas of clinical hematology. The previous edition was published in 2007.
Purpose: The purpose of this atlas is to complement "the 13th and future editions of Wintrobe's Clinical Hematology." These worthy objectives well met by this book.
Audience: The intended audience is "anyone interested in blood disorders including students, laboratory technicians, and physicians in training, as well as oncologists, hematologists, and pathologists at every level of experience." This is a correct assessment of the target audience. The authors and editors are credible authorities in their respective subjects.
Features: This book lives up to its designation as an atlas — images galore with minimal (and concise) text. The images are simply spectacular, ranging from perfectly color-compensated photomicrographs to immunophenotyping scattergrams to excised organs to characteristic physical exam findings and much more. This is not the book to get if you want in-depth discussion of hematological diseases; get the current edition of Wintrobe's Clinical Hematology instead. This is the book to get if you want a quick reference for any image-related aspect of hematological disease. I really liked the introductory chapter on the systematic approach to microscopic examination of blood and bone marrow - I wish someone had sat me down and taught me this early in my residency training. This updated edition is much needed. The field has already undergone two revisions (2008, 2016) of the various World Health Organization classification schemes for hematological disorders since the first edition. Two small drawbacks — figure 7.1 has a panel labeled "nRBCs" when it shows Pappenheimer bodies instead, and the entire discussion of CMML is represented by only four descriptive elements contained in a single line/entry in table 7.9. The online access is easy and seamless, and I loved the highlighting and annotation feature.
Assessment: Wow - this is a much welcomed updated atlas that provides superb images of many aspects of hematological disorders. Get it — you will use it a lot!
