Battle scarred, weary and haunted, he just wanted a quiet life with a normal routine where there were no missions, no life and death situations, and a peaceful simplicity that might actually banish the nightmare that had been plaguing him for over three years. If the fact that he had a gun pointed at his pretty, new boss wasn’t indication enough to prove that point, the large man standing behind him pointing a shotgun at his head, was.
Widowed, raising three beautiful, intelligent and gifted daughters on her own, she just wanted to keep her land and give her children the best possible life she could offer, but someone had other ideas and was as determined to run her off as she was to stay. In order to stand her ground she knew she needed help and thought she’d hired just the right man for the job. Now she wasn’t so sure.
Marnie Perkins dug her nails into the palms of her hands. No matter what happened, she would not move, would not show fear. She let out a careful breath, praying she hadn’t made the worst decision of her life. “If you shoot me…you’re fired.”
If they both survived the next few minutes, they each just might be the answer the other was looking for.
Jason snorted out a laugh and took aim. “More than likely...” Not that that would matter any, Jason thought grimly, if the guy behind him shot as well. Dead men didn’t need to worry about employment. Unable to see a reasonable solution out of the situation at hand, Jason cleared his mind and eyed his target. One shot was all he was going to get. Marnie swallowed hard and closed her eyes as he leveled the gun. He had to give her credit, Jason thought, she hadn’t moved a muscle. He nodded, “Now Marnie,” Jason said softly, then pulled the trigger.
