G. Lewis has a wonderful skill with his writing, hiding deep and serious research under simple, honest story-telling."
Told in the first person, Witness opens with Rivkah, a young shepherd girl, guarding her father's flock. When a lion comes stalking one of the lambs, her friend Shemu'el helps her drive it off. Her father gives her the lamb to start her dowry, a dowry she dreams of using when she marries Shemu'el.
Rivkah is in the fields the night angels appear and goes to Bethlehem with other shepherds. Rivkah tiptoes into the stable and, as any young girl might do, she asks to hold the baby. Miryam agrees, but reaches from behind to assist her.
During the Feast of Weeks, Shemu'el goes to Jerusalem for examination to become a man. Before he leaves, he professes his love for Rivkah and tells her he wants her for his wife. At the Temple Shemu'el's party is trapped between protestors and Roman troops. He disappears in the melee and his family assumes he's dead, incinerated in the ensuing fire. But Shemu'el is not dead. He's in chains on his way to Antioch to become a Roman slave.
Divided by fate, united by love, these two young people grow to separate adulthood, each with their dreams and desires unfulfilled, while the world of Rome and conquest moves inexorably on. Eight years later Shemu'el's owner dies leaving a testament freeing his slaves, which releases Shemu'el to search for his lost love.
Years later, Rivkah is in Jerusalem and trapped in a crowd as three men pass on their way to execution. Recognizing Miryam and Yeshua, she feels compelled to follow them to Golgotha. And so, Rivkah, who was there at the beginning, is also there at the end. But this time it's her arms that help a grief-stricken Miryam support her dead son.
