Purpose: The purpose is to discuss issues of well-being in women in medicine, a unique and important subject. The objective is met by the authors.
Audience: It is written for women trainees in medicine and is also appropriate for women involved in the practice of medicine. It is well-referenced and authoritative.
Features: The book covers women in medicine from a historical perspective. It then goes on to discuss issues particular to women in medicine including family issues, work environments and stress. Finally, the book discusses practice settings for women in medicine, including academic and private practice settings. This is a scholarly account of the subject, thorough and well-referenced.
Assessment: This book occupies a unique niche in the medical education market. As the number of women in medicine approach 50 percent of practicing physicians, this book provides an important reference for trainees and practicing physicians. The current edition is subtitled "Career and Life Management", whereas previous editions were titled "Stress and Women in Medicine." This edition appears to be a more thorough discussion of the role of women in medicine and the issues faced by women in the practice of medicine.
