About the Author

Mary Angela O'Neal, MD is an Instructor in Neurology at Harvard Medicial School and the Director of the Women's Neurology Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. There she has organized a multidisciplinary program in Women's Neurology which includes collaborations with obstetrics, obstetrical anesthesia, neurosurgery, women's mental health, medicine and multiple subspecialties in neurology.

Description: This book addresses a variety of neurological conditions which, due to the influence of hormonal and reproductive health issues, warrant special consideration in women. The book offers practical advice for approaching and managing these conditions.
Purpose: Recognizing the need for more awareness and evidence-based practice guidelines on gender-specific neurological conditions, the author has produced an approachable book that addresses several common questions faced by clinicians who care for women with neurological disorders.
Audience: This book is written for caregivers who are likely to see these patients, such as physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who practice in internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics, and gynecology. The author is a renowned neurologist with expertise in this realm, as are the majority of the contributors. Two contributors offer helpful insight from their practices in endocrinology and gynecologic oncology.
Features: This book illustrates a variety of clinical scenarios, each highlighting a neurologic issue unique to women, which are followed by a discussion identifying key clinical points and best practice measures. The chapters are titled to emphasize the chief complaint rather than the diagnosis, which encourages readers to think through the case before moving on to the discussion that follows. The references at the end of each chapter are focused and current. A wide range of issues are covered, such as management of epilepsy in pregnancy, fertility preservation in a patient with newly diagnosed brain cancer, peripartum emergencies, and optimization of brain health in the older population. The discussion of multiple sclerosis in pregnancy offers a helpful summary of disease-modifying therapies with respect to teratogenicity, and does a commendable job of addressing the topic of breastfeeding. While a chapter is devoted to examining the role of hormonal therapy in preventing Alzheimer's disease, additional discussion of whether it increases the risk of stroke or meningeal tumors would have been appreciated.
Assessment: The authors have done a remarkable job of identifying key medical and ethical concerns and providing evidence-based practice guidelines. There are few other books in this field, and while this one may not be sufficient as a standalone reference, its value lies in its pragmatic presentation of important neurological conditions in women and up-to-date recommendations.
