CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA

PULLOVER

Textured, oversized, comfortable, and visually appealing — the Carmel-by-the-Sea Pullover is a versatile wardrobe staple that can be paired with herringbone trousers and leggings alike. The body of this pullover is worked in the round to the underarm, then the front and back are worked separately back and forth.

FINISHED SIZE

38½ (41½, 46, 50, 54½, 58¼)" (98 [105.5, 117, 127, 138.5, 148] cm) bust circumference. Pullover shown measures 41½" (105.5 cm); modeled with 7½" (19 cm) of positive ease.

YARN

Worsted weight (#4)

SHOWN HERE: Sugar Bush Yarns Bold (100% extrafine superwash merino; 190 yd [174 m]/ 3½ oz [100 g]): #3024 pulp mill, 6 (6, 7, 8, 8, 9) balls.

NEEDLES

Size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm): 16" and 32" circular (cir) and set of double-pointed (dpn).

Size U.S. 8 (5 mm): 32" cir and set of dpn.

Work in k1, p1 rib for 1½" (3.8 cm). Change to larger needle. Work Broken Rib in rnds (see Stitch Guide) until piece measures 14 (14, 14½, 15¼, 15¾, 15¼)" (35.5 [35.5, 37, 38.5, 40, 38.5] cm) from CO, ending with Rnd 2 of patt, and ending 3 (3, 3, 5, 5, 5) sts before end of rnd on last rnd.

CHAPTER 2

FALMOUTH

CARDIGAN

With its simple dolman-sleeve construction and generously proportioned collar, the Falmouth Cardigan is the perfect showcase for this wool-cashmere-silk blend yarn. Size U.S. 8 (5 mm): 60" circular (cir) and set of double-pointed (dpn).

Size U.S. 9 (5.5 mm): 40" cir.

Using tip of larger cir as working needle, join 37 (41, 45, 49, 53, 57) shoulder sts using three-needle BO, then BO center 32 (32, 32, 28, 28, 28) back sts, then join 37 (41, 45, 49, 53, 57) rem shoulder sts.

ARMHOLE EDGINGS

With dpn and RS facing, beg at base of armhole, pick up and knit 52 sts along armhole edge (about 4 sts for every 5 rows). Pm and join in the rnd.

Purl 1 rnd.

BO all sts kwise.

FRONT BAND

With smaller cir needle and RS facing, beg at lower right front corner, pick up and knit 92 (92, 94, 94, 96, 98) sts along right front to shoulder join, 34 (34, 34, 30, 30, 30) sts across back neck, and 92 (92, 94, 94, 96, 98) sts along left front to lower left front corner — 218 (218, 222, 218, 222, 226) sts.

Beg with WS Row 2, work in Broken Rib patt until band measures 5" (12.5 cm).

BO all sts in patt. Weave in ends.

CHAPTER 3

MONTEREY

TEE

Kate Gagnon Osborn

The Monterey Tee features a beautiful allover twisted-rib lace motif; the simple construction allows you to focus on the rhythmic pattern. Style this top with a simple camisole or layer it over long sleeves for transitional seasons. This tee is worked from the bottom up in pieces and then blocked to allow the openwork to bloom.

DK weight (#3) The Fibre Co. Luma (50% merino wool, 25% organic cotton, 15% linen, 10% silk; 137 yd [125 m]/1¾ oz [50 g]): willow, 4 (5, 6, 7, 7, 8) skeins. Yarn distributed by Kelbourne Woolens.

NEEDLES

Size U.S. 4 (3.5 mm): straight and 16" circular (cir).

Size U.S. 5 (3.75 mm): straight.

Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Marker (m); removable m; stitch holders; tapestry needle.

GAUGE

20 sts and 27 rows = 4" (10 cm) in lace patt on larger needles.

NOTES

• This top is worked in pieces from the bottom up and seamed.

• During shoulder shaping, if there are not enough stitches to work a decrease with its companion yarnover or a double decrease with both its yarnovers, work the remaining stitch(es) in stockinette instead.
