Description: This is a condensed, user-friendly version of the classic pharmacology reference, Goodman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, 12th edition, Brunton et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2011). It complements the original authoritative book, and differs from it in being designed and organized to facilitate learning. It is thus a useful addition to the current assortment of learner-oriented pharmacology books.
Purpose: The purpose is to present the most important pharmacological information and concepts from the main textbook in a learner-friendly format as a companion for advanced study. With the ever expanding body of pharmacological knowledge, there is a significant need for well-designed, authoritative, learner-oriented books on this topic.
Audience: This is appropriate for anyone learning or reviewing pharmacology, such as medical, graduate, and pharmacy students, or medical residents. The authors are established pharmacology educators at the University of Utah.
Features: It covers the full spectrum of drugs in the main textbook, with a focus on primary uses. Notable features include sidebars containing key information and two-color tables that clearly present and summarize important information. Cases are used to illustrate and explain key points including clinical uses and guidelines and disease pathophysiology in a question-and-answer format. Quiz questions with explanations are also provided. Bulleted sections present key concepts in each chapter, as well as how the information in this book differs from the main textbook. Drug lists include generic and brand names. Tables present dosing and pharmacokinetic details.
Assessment: Overall, the authors have achieved their goal of presenting a wealth of pharmacological information in a readily accessible, learner-friendly manner. The case discussions are useful for illustrating key points in a clinical context, which should prove particularly helpful for individuals preparing for licensing exams with vignette-style questions. However, some sections, notably neuropharmacology, are overly compressed. Drugs lists are alphabetical, but not grouped by drug type. Some tables include details of drugs not included in the drug lists. Despite the stated focus on primary uses, some cases highlight secondary uses, and primary uses are sometimes not adequately covered. Some key details are introduced only in the bulleted key concepts or in the answers to questions in the summary quizzes. Non-mechanism-based adverse effects that are not of major clinical importance are not covered. Nevertheless, this is a worthwhile addition to the learner-friendly pharmacology books currently available, but it does have several important limitations and cannot fully substitute for the more comprehensive books, such as the original textbook.
