About the Author

Trudi Petersen has worked in acute psychiatric services, substance misuse and health promotion. She currently works as a hepatitis research nurse specialist at Bristol Specialist Drug Service and lectures at the University of Glamorgan in South Wales.
Andrew McBride is a consultant psychiatrist in Oxford. He previously ran services in Cardiff and Mid Glamorgan.

Description: This is a straightforward guide and a user-friendly introduction to the field of substance abuse and dependence. Readers can come away with a general understanding of the different approaches to substance dependence and abuse without getting caught up in complex information.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an entry level understanding of substance misuse and to make an explicit link between theory and practice. These are worthy objectives, without question, and the authors meet them.
Audience: The intended readership includes nursing and medical staff, social workers, psychologists, counselors, volunteers, lecturers, tutors, and trainers.
Features: The book is split into five parts covering basics, approaches to the care and treatment of substance misusers, specific populations, policy issues, and case studies. The basics are particularly well covered and each chapter uses helpful learning objectives. In addition, the client assessment is of great value to the reader.
Assessment: I really enjoyed this book. It is simple and concise, yet it provides enough information on various points of substance misuse to educate most practitioners and teachers. Although there are many books on this subject, I am not sure that I have seen one as comprehensive as this one without getting too detailed. The authors have done a fine job catering to a very wide audience.
