Description: This is the translation of the revised third edition of a German work on the science of ballistic injury that was published in 2008.
Purpose: Physics and principles of ballistics and the intersection of tissue and missiles are discussed, with an emphasis on bullet injury.
Audience: Researchers, forensic pathologists, and traumatologists with an interest in the science of bullet injury are an appropriate audience for this book.
Features: The initial chapters describe mechanics and fluid dynamics as applied to ammunition of various kinds. Next, firearms and wound phenomenon in tissue and physical modeling systems are reviewed. The largest portion of the book describes the interaction of missiles with various types of tissue such as bone, soft tissue, and brain, along with injury patterns in specific body regions. Forensic details of injury from handguns, rifles, rubber bullets, arrows, and alarm pistols are presented. Although this is a translation, the text is excellent. Photographs in black and white reproduce with good to excellent quality. References are collected in a bibliography of several hundred citations, the majority of which reflect significant papers in the primary literature. A large number of secondary sources are also included. The table of contents lists chapters, authors, and subtopics while the extensive appendixes provide ballistic data for common weapons and a concluding subject index of approximately 10 pages provides adequate access to content.
Assessment: This is a sound introduction to the science of missile injury. This work complements clinical reports such as Ryan's Ballistic Trauma: A Practical Guide, 3rd edition, Brooks et al. (Springer, 2011).
