Description: This pocket guide to effective wound care protocols provides step-by-step directions for assessment, dressings, treatment plans, and daily management. The guide gives clear, concise directions to effectively manage wounds on the go. Its bulleted format with illustrations and charts makes it easy to use at the bedside in the hospital or in the outpatient setting, even in home care. The pages are laminated for easy cleaning. The previous edition was published in 2015.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a pocket/handheld guide to wounds. The guide outlines the basic wound care in terms that are understandable, with treatment options and longer term management. It is just like having a wound care expert at the bedside with you. As the complexity of wound care increases and reimbursement can decline, it is important for every nurse to be a "wound care" nurse.
Audience: The book could be used by medical interns/residents who are not wound care physicians, advanced practice nurses, aides, LPN nurses, physical therapists, and athletic trainers.
Features: This guide provides instant access to essential wound care information that could be needed at the bedside or in any setting. Starting with assessment, there is a review of the anatomy of the skin and the wound healing process. The book covers how to describe a wound with measurements and documentation, and subsequent chapters discuss specific ulcers such as pressure, vascular, and diabetic. Wound care plans are discussed, including irrigation, debridement, and collection of specimens. The final chapter covers wound care products including medications and negative pressure wound therapy. Unique features of the book include its size, the laminated pages, and the concise layout. In several situations the guide has a list of needed products followed with a "how to" bulleted format discussion. One quibble: when discussing negative pressure wound therapy, I would make sure that it is also referred to as "wound vac," which in my knowledge and practice is the term most commonly used. Most likely, readers will figure it out, but I would recommend the dual term.
Assessment: The pocket guide is unique as it provides expert guidance for wound care in the absence of a wound care expert. However, I did not see in the guide a discussion of when consultation with a certified would care nurse is recommended. I am not aware of another comprehensive guide like this one. This update is justified as the science of wounds, concepts of would care, and products are rapidly advancing.
