Description: This well written book provides clear discussions on the pathophysiology and treatment of ulcers. Detailed photographs of applying various types of dressings are helpfully included. Possible therapies are presented, including alternative herbal modalities. The authors are careful to indicate whether good, double blind well controlled studies do or do not substantiate purported healing benefits.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate dermatologists on a sound therapeutic approach to treating chronic wounds and ulcers.
Audience: The audience includes such physicians as family practitioners, internists, geriatricians, dermatologists, orthopedists, and surgeons.
Features: There is a very good clinical discussion on the diagnostic evaluation of chronic ulcers. Determining the etiology of the ulcer based on the presentation of the initial lesion is useful. Good tables shaded in light blue highlight the significant points made in each chapter. A practical approach to treating ulcers is covered: dietary supplementation, debridement, how to apply and choose appropriate dressings, and when surgical intervention is indicated.
Assessment: This is definitely among the better books on treating ulcers. Any physician dealing with wound healing will find this an invaluable resource.
