CHAPTER 1

Yellow Rose of Texas

MATERIALS

LACE

• Crochet cotton size 10: 200 yds white; 100 yds shaded light yellows and 50 yds hunter green

• Size 7 steel crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge


GAUGE

Rnds 1–10 of large flower = 2 ¼ inches in diameter

Check gauge to save time.


PATTERN NOTE

Join rnds with a sl st unless otherwise stated.


SPECIAL STITCHES

Double tr (dtr): Yo 3 times, insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw up a lp, [yo, draw through 2 lps on hook] 4 times.

Double treble cluster (dtr cl): Ch 5, holding back last lp of each st on hook, 4 dtr in 5th ch from hook, yo, pull though all lps on hook.

Beg cl: Ch 2, holding back on hook last lp of each st, 2 dc in indicated st, yo, draw through all 3 lps on hook.

Cl: Holding back on hook last lp of each st, 3 dc in indicated st, yo, draw through all 4 lps on hook.


LARGE FLOWER

Rnd 1: With shaded light yellows, ch 4, join to form a ring, ch 4 (counts as first hdc, ch-2), [hdc in ring, ch 2] 7 times, join in 2nd ch of beg ch-4. (8 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 2: (Sc, 3 dc, sc) in each ch-2 sp around, do not join. (8 petals)

Rnd 3: Working from behind petals, sc in 2nd ch of beg ch-4 of rnd 1, ch 3, [sc in next unworked hdc of rnd 1, ch 3] around, join in beg sc. (8 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 4: (Sc, 5 dc, sc) in each ch-3 sp around, do not join. (8 petals)

Rnd 5: Working from behind petals, sc in beg sc of rnd 3, ch 4, [sc in next unworked sc of rnd 3, ch 4] around, join in beg sc. (8 ch-4 sps)

Rnd 6: (Sc, 7 dc, sc) in each ch-4 sp around, do not join. (8 petals)

Rnd 7: Working from behind petals, sc in beg sc of rnd 5, ch 5, [sc in next unworked sc of rnd 5, ch 5] around, join in beg sc. (8 ch-5 sps)

Rnd 8: (Sc, 9 dc, sc) in each ch-5 sp around, do not join.

Rnd 9: Working from behind petals, sc in beg sc of rnd 7, ch 6, [sc in next unworked sc of rnd 7, ch 6] around, join in beg sc. (8 ch-6 sps)

Rnd 10: (Sc, 11 dc, sc) in each ch-6 sp around, do not join. (8 petals)

Rnd 11: Working from behind petals, sc in beg sc of rnd 9, ch 7, [sc in next unworked sc of rnd 9, ch 7] around, join in beg sc, fasten off. (8 ch-7 sps)


Center

With white, leaving a 4-inch end, dtr cl (see Special Stitches), sl st tightly in first ch of beg ch-5. Leaving a 4-inch end, fasten off.

With 4-inch ends, tie large flower center to center of large flower through ch-2 sps of rnd 1.


LARGE LEAF

Make 8.

Rnd 1 (RS): With green, ch 10, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, *hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next ch, 2 tr in next ch, tr in next ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch *, 3 sc in last ch, working in rem lps on opposite side of foundation ch, rep from * to * once, sc in next ch, join in beg sc.

With RS facing, sl st in 4th ch of any unworked ch-7 on rnd 11 of large flower, fasten off.


INNER PINEAPPLE SECTION

Rnd 1: With RS facing, attach white with a sl st at tip of any leaf on large flower, ch 16, [sl st at tip of next leaf, ch 16] around, join in beg sl st.

Rnd 2: Beg cl(see Special Stitches) in same st as joining, *ch 5, sk next 5 chs, dc in next ch, [ch 1, dc in next ch] 5 times, ch 5 **, cl(see Special Stitches) in next sl st, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join in top of beg cl.

Rnd 3: (Beg cl, ch 2, cl) in same st as joining, *ch 4, sc in next dc, [ch 3, sc in next dc] 5 times, ch 4 **, (cl, ch 2, cl) in top of next cl, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join in top of beg cl.

Rnd 4: Beg cl in same st as joining, *ch 2, dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, cl in next cl, ch 3, [sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3] 5 times **, cl in next cl, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join in top of beg cl.
