Overview

Your voice and your vote ensure that the principles and interests of the
United States of America are preserved. The Congress enacted legislation that
requires a national assessment of what students know and can do in various
subject areas. Known as “The Nation’s Report Card,” an independent body of
the Department of Education administers the program at grades four, eight,
and twelve. This book’s framework was developed in part, using the high
school assessments for civics, economics, and U.S. history. It does not advocate
promotion of any political affiliation, or party. The overarching goal is to
motivate you to become involved in, and remain engaged in, the civic and political
process at all levels of government for the common good of the country.
