With 165 multiple-page entries about youth ranging from age two to 30, this resource provides nonbiased information on the history, organizations, interests, ethnicity, religion, and social problems of this group. Through an emphasis on shared meaning, identity, and passions using language, stories, rituals, and dress, Bronner (American studies, Pennsylvania State Univ., Harrisbrurg) and Clark (anthropology, Rutgers Univ.) present the main facts of each entry and, if historic, when this aspect was popular and who was involved. While most of the subjects involve the United States, there is some overlap with Mexico and Canada. The summaries are arranged alphabetically. A topic finder in the front organizes the work into 21 subject areas with some entries in multiple areas. Entries have "see also" references at the end to further help the user. While each item supplies a further reading list, not all include pictures. Inclusive in its scope, this volume tackles well-known topics and more obscure ones alike. Libraries that have Lucy Rollin's Twentieth-Century Teen Culture by the Decades will find this offering a better resource. Though the material covered here can be found in other titles, this one pulls the information together in a two-volume set. Students may use this for reports, and parents, teachers, and caregivers will find it valuable as well.
