Description: This is an excellent reference for physical diagnosticians in pediatrics. It is subdivided by subspecialty with an emphasis on diagnoses that have significant findings on physical exam. The book is not intended to be inclusive of all pediatric medicine. It has very clear descriptions and representative photographs and/or drawings to demonstrate visual findings that are important in making a diagnosis. The previous edition was published in 1997.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a resource for physical findings seen on exam using visual images and description. The author feels that to see a physical finding enhances learning of the disease described. This book clearly fulfills this mission for the reader. It should be available and can be used in all training programs involving students, residents, and even senior staff. It is an outstanding tool for learning to recognize relevant physical findings seen in the pediatric population.
Audience: This book is clearly designed to be a teaching tool for young housestaff and students. The clarity of the images and the didactic thought processes in reaching a diagnosis make it an outstanding resource for practitioners at any level of training. This is the book's intent and it is a success. The author is a credible authority in pediatrics.
Features: The book provides a broad range of visual diagnostic findings seen in a pediatric population. It is divided by subspecialties and provides excellent points of interest to each field using photographic and artist renderings of physical findings appropriate to each diagnosis. The quality of the artwork and photos is outstanding.
Assessment: This atlas should be a part of every pediatrician's library as a source for information and education. I know of no other book which covers as broad a variety of topics with the number and quality of illustrations.
