CHAPTER 1

"What's that strange noise?"

"I don't have the foggiest idea," said Dreadful.

"Well," said Nosey, "I'm gonna check it out." Going over to the door, he put his pointed ear there and listened, but heard nothing.

"Shhhh!" He yelled because all the other elves were making so much noise. "I can't hear. You guys are too loud."

The silly little elves paid no attention but instead started to sing. They were getting ready for Christmas, making all the toys, hoping that the children would be good girls and boys.

"Oh, oh, I hear it again, that strange noise. Where is it coming from? It must be by the window. I'll go take a look. My goodness, something is out there!"

"What do you think it is," asked Denty who was the workshop dentist.

"I don't have a clue, but I'm gonna find out," replied Nosey. He hopped up on a wooden table that Jebba had just finished painting for Christmas. Nosey got full of shiny yellow paint.

"Holy moly, you dope. You just ruined my table."

"Oh, I'm sorry, Jebba, but I've got to find out what that noise is." He peered out the window and saw something glistening in the snow. Quickly he jumped off the table and ran out the door out of their workshop. He couldn't see too well as there wasn't much light at all except for the moon. Yet he could still hear that strange noise.

"Ah, ah, er, er, ike, ike, help me, help me."

"Oh, by Jove, it's an elf almost frozen to death! Hey guys, hurry, come and help me."

Finally the rest of the busy elves came out to help.

"Rompin' reindeer, look at this guy. His toes and nose got icicles on them. Quit all the chatter and let's get him inside."

All the little elves picked up the tiny elf and carried him inside.

"Oh me, oh my. He's a mess. Look at him. Is he alive?" The elves cried out.

"I don't know," said Nosey. "We'll sure find out. Get a fire going, quick!"

Sparky, the Chief, started a fire in the beautiful tiny fireplace. The flames were blue, red, and gold.

"Lovely to look at, don't you think?" asked Astro.

"That's not what it's for tonight," said Dreadful. "It's to warm up the frozen elf."

Immediately the elves carried him over to the rustling fire!

"Put him in front of it. Let me see if he's breathing okay," said Doc who was the Doctor, of course. He put his ear to the newcomer's chest and listened.

"Is he alive or not, Doc," cried the elves.

"I don't know. I hear noises, guess his heart is pumping." Doc took a better look and then he noticed that the frozen elf was moving his feet.

"Yep, I'd say he's alive — listen! Listen! He's trying to talk.

At that very moment, the elf opened up his eyes and looked around in wonderment. "Oh, oh, oh, err, err, where am I?"

"You're fine," said the elves. "You're in Santa's workshop. We're the number one elves, the best in the world. We work for Mr. and Mrs. Claus."

"Oh, oh my. What happened to me?"

"We don't know," said Doc. "Nosey heard you out there in the snow. What were you doing out there?"

"Guess I got lost and I couldn't go any further."

"What's your name?"

"Zoink — Zoink's my name."

"Where are you from?"

"I'm from the South Pole."

"What do you do there?"

"Nothing much. I water the flowers most of the time."

"Watering flowers? That doesn't seem like much fun for an elf."

"Yeah, we're always busy here on the North Pole. Work, work, work, and it's never done," said the other elves.

"Hey guys, we're forgetting something. We've got to tell Santa about him," said Jebba.

"Oh, gee whiz, you're right. Who wants to get Santa?" asked Denty.

"Not me," said Nosey. "I'll get in trouble for letting someone in the workshop."

"Good luck," cried the other elves.

"Be back in a flash," said Doc.

While Doc was on a mission to tell Santa about the new elf, Zoink, the other elves gathered around to check out this strange new elf.

"Looks kind of lazy to me," said Denty. "Don't you agree?"

"Well, we have to give him a chance. He was almost dead, after all," said the elves. Let's all sing a cheer-up song for him, okay? Ready, one ... two ... three ... here we go. Hi, ho, hi ho, around and round we go. We work real hard for Santa Claus, hi ho, hi ho. We build the toys for all the girls and boys. It's one two three, hooray for we, hi ho, hi ho.

"That's a strange song," said Zoink.

"What are you talking about? It's our favorite song," replied the elves.

Meanwhile, Doc was knocking on Santa's door, thinking to himself what a beautiful cottage, all, red, white and sparkly, lit up brighter than the stars in the sky. He could also smell the wonderful scent of freshly cut Christmas pine trees, ever so green and tall. Also, he smelled the wonderful hot cocoa that Mrs. Claus was famous for making.

"Jingle bells, jingle bells, ring-a-ling," chimed the doorbell. "I guess they didn't hear me." Quickly, he rang again.

"Coming, coming," cried Santa. He opened the door and said, "Doc, what are you doing here? It's very late."

"Well, Santa, we have a visitor."

"Come on in and have some hot cocoa and tell me all about it," said Santa. "Mrs. Claus, would you bring us some hot cocoa, please? Doc is here. So, what's going on, Doc?"

"Well, Santa, we found an elf outside our workshop window, and he was almost dead. When he finally woke up, he said he was from the South pole."

"What is he doing all the way up here," asked Santa.

"He says he got lost."

"Here you are," said Mrs. Claus and handed him a cup of delicious smelling hot cocoa."

"Hi, Mrs. Claus," said Doc.

"Well, it's good to see you, Doc. Here, have your hot cocoa."

It looked great, piping hot with loads of mini marshmallows stacked on top with a tray of Christmas tree cookies. Yum, what a treat to be in Santa's very own living room, this great, jolly old man, who cared so much for all the children.

Waiting for instructions from Santa, Doc ate way too many Christmas cookies. That and the warmth of the glowy fireplace made him very sleepy. Soon his eyes began to close, and he fell sound asleep on the great, big comfy chair.

"So, you say the little guy is lost, huh?" Santa was tickled pink when he saw Doc snoozing in his big chair.

"Ummm, oh my, I'm sorry, Santa. I didn't mean to fall asleep. It's just been a really hard day."

"Ho, ho, don't fret. You say the little guy is lost? What's his name?"

"Zoink's his name," replied Doc.

"Well, Doc, check him out, and when he's well and able, send him on his merry way home."

"Okay, Santa, whatever you say. I'll take care of it."

Back at the workshop, thump, thump, thump.

"Who's that," asked Zoink.

"Oh, it must be the reindeer. We've got to feed them, but I almost forgot," said Jebba.

"Thump, thump, thump."

"Okay, okay. We're coming." Jebba cried.

"Can I go with you to see them?" Zoink asked.

"Sure, come on."

All of the elves got dressed in their warm, heavy clothing to go and feed the reindeer, each carrying a pail of food. The deer were pleased as punch to see them.

"Here you go, guys. Have a good dinner, and sorry we're so late."

"Uh oh, somebody's missing."

"Oh, it's Dondi."

"Where is he?"

"I don't know. I haven't seen him."

The elves were trying to figure out where Dondi went because it was not like him to miss feeding time.

Zoink loved seeing the reindeer, but he became very tired. Yawning a lot gave the clue to the elves to take him back to the workshop and let him go to bed.

"Come, Zoink," they said. "You need some rest from your long trip."

"Sounds good to me. I am very tired," replied Zoink.

Entering the workshop, Astro began to wonder where they would put Zoink to sleep. However, he had just made a beautiful bunk bed for Christmas, so he thought it would be okay if Zoink slept in it.

"You can wear one of my PJs," said Nosey. "I'm sure it will fit you."

"Thanks." Zoink got into Nosey's jammies immediately, and then he jumped right into the new bed.

Ah, great, he thought. This is just great.

But what happened next was not great. All of a sudden, the crazy little elf stuck his feet up in the air and started playing with his toes. He hummed a tune while doing so.

No one saw him, at least for now.

All of the rest of the elves came to get ready for night night.
