Ned Young is the author and illustrator of Zoomer and Zoomer's Summer Snowstorm. He is a self-taught painter and illustrator whose playful sense of humor appears on a variety of merchandise, including prints, calendars, puzzles, mugs, and greeting cards.

Zoomer's second picture book is every bit as surreal as his first. The black and tan puppy gets distracted while using the snow cone machine, and when he opens the window, "winter" gushes like a geyser into the sunny yard (to the annoyance of his baseball-playing brothers). Zoomer lets loose in his self-made winter wonderland, sculpting the snow into enormous sea creatures, dinosaurs, and the "polar empire of Zoomarctica." Although the ending has the feel of a non sequitur (Zoomer gets hungry, cleans up the snow, and convinces his mother to make chili), readers will delight in the quirky juxtaposition of the dog's implausibly masterful ice sculptures with emerald grass and an azure sky. His disdainful brothers are finally won over by the fully functional amusement park with a roller coaster and a Ferris wheel that he makes. Ever the responsible dog, Zoomer eventually cleans up the mess in the kitchen and requests chili for dinner. Young's illustrations are bursting with the contrast between the green of summer and the blue white of winter. They practically leap from the page and give the text amazing vitality. The crisp and clean artwork is chock-full of details that feature numerous humorous aspects. A cold snack on a hot day turns into a gleefully over-the-top winter fantasia. One steamy summer afternoon, Zoomer the pup asks to make a snow cone, and, yes, he'll clean up when he's done. And he does...but it's what happens in between that will capture readers' imaginations. Zoomer takes advantage of an overflowing snow-cone machine to change summer to winter. Armed with only a shovel, he begins by carving a snow duck but quickly escalates to a menagerie that includes dinosaurs, a whale and a dog Sphinx. Then it's a cocoa break in the fantastic castle of Zoomarctica. Meanwhile, his stick-in-the-mud older twin brothers just want to practice baseball. Their incredulous looks and complaints turn to delight, however, when Zoomer crafts an amusement park out of the snow. A rumbling tummy ends the fun on a high note when his request for chili raises his parents' eyebrows...until they look outside. Relying on his exuberant illustrations to make Zoomer's world come alive, Young improves on his somewhat-uncertain debut (Zoomer, 2010). The palette really emphasizes the contrast between the cold, blue snow and the vibrant colors of summer. Summer (and maybe winter, too) will never again be the same with Zoomer around.
