Laura Bush was the First Lady of the United States from 2001 to 2009. As the wife of Former President George W. Bush, Laura Bush was heavily involved in global education and literacy. An Honorary Ambassador for the UN Literary Decade, she hosted the first-ever White House Conference on Global Literacy in 2006 to encourage international cooperation and build free societies through literacy. In 2001 she joined with the Library of Congress to launch the first National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. She co-wrote the picture books Our Great Big Backyard and Read All about It! with her daughter Jenna Bush, as well as her memoir Spoken from the Heart.
