Purpose: The authors have succeeded in providing the knowledge needed for anesthetic management of obstetric patients in an easy to use format.
Audience: All practicing anesthesiologists, whether novice or experienced, are the intended audience. Anesthesia residents and even medical students will find this book invaluable in helping them better understand the practice of obstetric anesthesia.
Features: An explanation of physiology and pharmacology begins the book, covering the physiology of pregnancy and the pharmacology of all major medications used in pregnancy or labor along with their possible effects on a fetus. The antepartum section includes useful discussions of medicolegal aspects of obstetric anesthesia as well anesthetic management of nonobstetric surgeries. The comprehensive section on labor and delivery is quite detailed, covering everything from managing elective labor to obstetric emergencies, and is followed by a section on postpartum anesthetic issues and complications. A full section covers different disease states, discussing each as it affects maternal and fetal physiology and, in turn, how it would affect anesthetic management. The book ends with a review of current national guidelines that relate to anesthetic management from different societies. This is an extremely well written book and the information is clear, clinical, and practical. Topics get thorough explanations, not just a recitation of facts, and every recommendation comes with an explanation. Important points are highlighted in bold. The level of consistency in the format and the level of information are commendable.
Assessment: This book is a treat to read and is very handy for a quick reference. The information is extensive — the size of book is quite deceptive. Anesthesia residents will find it a very comprehensive source of information during their rotation through labor and delivery. It can easily be relied upon as a sole source of information on obstetric anesthesia.
