Peritoneal malignancy is a rapidly growing field within surgical oncology. National and International treatment programmes and training curricula are being established worldwide to co-ordinate treatment and management of these challenging clinical problems. A large body of evidence now exists, but the practical implications of this evidence base remain unclear. The Peritoneal Malignancy Institute in Basingstoke, the largest centre in the world, is at the forefront of new developments and techniques. Akash Mehta is Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at St Mark’s Hospital & Academic Institute, London, UK and holds the ESSO European Certification in Peritoneal Surface Oncology.

Description: This compact yet thorough manual reflects practice and research at the Peritoneal Malignancy Institute Basingstoke, a centralized center in the U.K. that treats large numbers of patients with peritoneal malignancies. The book reflects current best practices with a distinctly international perspective. It brings together a large amount of information in a highly readable and well-illustrated form designed to benefit practicing colorectal surgeons. Most of the book is devoted to treatment of colorectal, appendix, and other gastrointestinal tumors. Ovarian cancer is mentioned in several sections but is not the primary focus.
Purpose: The author states, "...this book is designed for the practicing colorectal surgeon and team. It includes tips on what to do if you encounter peritoneal disease; a framework for thinking about it...and it also touches on rarer peritoneal malignancies." The objectives are highly worthy; many surgeons are uncertain what to do when peritoneal metastases are encountered unexpectedly, and the steps that are taken during that first operation are critically important. This book is needed and will fill a distinct role.
Audience: This book is written for practitioners and specialists, primarily those who operate on the gastrointestinal tract (as opposed to gynecological surgeons). It also will be useful to fellows and trainees in surgical oncology. It definitely meets the needs of its intended audience. The authors are international authorities, primarily, but not exclusively, from the U.K.
Features: The first of the book's three major sections consists of six chapters devoted to various patterns and types of tumors metastatic to the peritoneum. It begins, appropriately, with a chapter on appendix tumors, covers peritoneal mesothelioma and other rare conditions, and concludes with a chapter on imaging. The next section covers various aspects of cytoreductive surgery and intraperitoneal chemotherapy. The book ends with chapters on histopathology, follow-up, recurrent disease, and future directions. The book is well illustrated throughout, with nicely reproduced color images enhancing the text on virtually every page. As previously noted, gynecological surgeons will likely look elsewhere for material on ovarian carcinoma. Although this disease is mentioned in appropriate sections, it is not, appropriately, a major focus of this book.
Assessment: This book fulfills a need for a compact, well-illustrated, authoritative, and portable reference that can help surgeons who encounter these neoplasms and patterns of spread less frequently than the authors. The authors generously share their expertise in this manual, and it will be of use to colorectal surgeons, surgical oncologists, and trainees around the world.
