This is a basic chemistry survey with a life sciences focus. The purpose is to provide basic chemistry information for first year students. This volume is intended as a text for first year university students in a life sciences program. Written for students in Britain, the claim is made that little chemistry knowledge is required to use this text. That is largely correct since this book begins with an introduction to the periodic table. Subsequent chapters review acid-base chemistry, basic organic reactions, and some elementary physics. In each instance, examples are taken from naturally occurring molecules. The utility of this volume for students in similar courses in the U.S. is limited. On the one hand, the introductory material may be too elementary but on the other, few such students will wish to grapple with the quantum theory of light or integrated rate equations. A more serious shortcoming relates to the tendency to oversimplify some concepts, resulting in outright error. Thus, the relationship between free energy and the equilibrium constant (a key concept) in misstated, several structural formulas are incorrect, and glycosides are generally stable to alkali in contrast to the impression given. This book cannot be recommended for students in U.S. Universities.
