Purpose: The purpose is to provide an up-to-date guide for the clinical application and troubleshooting of contact lens issues encountered in everyday practice. The authors have done an excellent job of providing relevant resources for practitioners in different clinical settings.
Audience: The book caters to students and practitioners alike. Written by well-known experts in the field, it is a wonderful reference for both beginning and experienced clinicians looking to expand their knowledge of contact lenses.
Features: The book is organized into four easy-to-read sections. The first is an introductory section on the basics of contact lens eye exams and optics of contact lenses. The other three sections are separated by lens type, namely gas-permeable, soft, and specialty lenses. For each lens design, the book provides an in-depth discussion on pertinent diagnostic testing, material and patient selection, clinical examination, and patient education. The best aspect is that each chapter ends with sample cases and questions to facilitate the clinical application of the topics discussed. The book is well illustrated with clinical images and reference tables. The only shortcoming is that it provides only a cursory overview of surgical procedures and ocular conditions that often indicate specialty contact lens fitting. To best manage these patients, practitioners should seek additional resources to supplement their knowledge of surgical complications and disease progression.
Assessment: This book, focusing on the fitting, evaluation, and troubleshooting of contact lenses, is an invaluable reference for clinical contact lens application. Due to the recent growth in the scleral lens and myopia control technology, an update was sorely needed.
