This book is a comprehensive volume dedicated to dermal absorption and decontamination. Given risks including chemical warfare and accidents with toxic industrial chemicals, studies involving dermal absorption and decontamination are of the utmost importance. Each chapter consists of a systematic review on an important dermal absorption and/or decontamination topic. Chapters address key issues such as the general acceptance of water/ soap and water as the gold standard of dermal decontamination despite the fact that it commonly provides incomplete decontamination and may even result in a “wash-in effect” (an increased penetration of contaminant). Decontamination with other substances (e.g. RSDL) is explored, and factors that affect dermal penetration (e.g. anatomical variation) are summarized. All systematic reviews are comprehensive and up-to-date.

Firstly,information on dermal decontamination may be used by governments for military and national defense purposes in the event of chemical warfare. Description: This book addresses dermal absorption and decontamination. Research scientists who formulate methods to treat contaminated skin are aware of the multitude of variables involved in designing animal models to predict how human skin will react and extrapolating such knowledge to rapid chemical neutralization. For example, transepidermal water loss varies with age of the skin and body region. The chemical, its characteristics, absorption coefficient, time of application, amount applied, and spreadability measurements all affect the amount of damage that develops, and these same factors must be taken into account when designing the antidote.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to inform scientists of the variables involved in creating substances to quickly and safely decontaminate the skin before significant dermal absorption occurs and causes harm. One of the goals is to serve as a reference guide for scientists involved in countering chemical warfare agents.
Audience: Scientists devoted to neutralizing and treating toxic chemicals, either from accidents or weapons, will likely be interested in reading this book, which is very basic science oriented.
Features: The book discusses the specialized instruments needed to properly evaluate the efficacy of a decontamination approach and to standardize measurements in the skin in order to evaluate the treatment responses. Some of the tools needed to execute these studies include liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, laser Doppler imaging, infrared thermography, and radioactive markers to measure absorption.
Assessment: A well-equipped, state-of-the-art biochemistry laboratory in a large academic center or a well-funded private industry setting would be best suited for the explorations described in this book.
