Description: Dr. Jacobson is a premier musculoskeletal radiologist using diagnostic ultrasound and his book provides an in-depth review of many pathological processes that can be readily assessed with sonography. The book does an excellent job of not only precisely describing key features of each pathological process, but also explaining the pitfalls that most commonly arise and how to correct them. The accompanying website's greatest value is in the cine imaging portraying real-time sonography, which is key in learning both the pathology and the techniques needed to be successful. The previous edition was published in 2012.
Purpose: The primary purpose is to provide the tools to accurately and confidently assess and diagnose musculoskeletal diseases. This edition has updated scanning protocols, techniques, and additional images with cine clips to illustrate points. Given that musculoskeletal ultrasound is still novel in certain settings, this is a much-needed resource. The print version is an easy-to-read, easy-to-reference book that is readily accessible at the work station. The online version is a quick reference for characteristic findings one may come across during practice and are beautifully demonstrated with cine imaging. Dr. Jacobson's clear, concise narration helps fulfill the intended objectives.
Audience: The intended audience is primarily musculoskeletal fellows and practicing radiologists. In addition, radiology residents interested in musculoskeletal imaging or those involved with musculoskeletal ultrasound at their programs will find this a much needed reference. Dr. Jacobson approaches this much in the same way he approaches a lecture to an audience: by providing high-yield information in an easy to comprehend and duplicate approach. He is a leader in musculoskeletal ultrasound and lectures on the topic at most of the large national conferences. He is consistently redefining parameters and protocols of musculoskeletal sonographic imaging and his updates are always appreciated.
Features: The book covers all of the currently accepted and well demonstrated uses of musculoskeletal ultrasound. In addition to assessing for joint effusions, bursitis, or tendinous injuries, to name a few entities, the book covers potential difficulties that may arise during these assessments, which is great for trouble shooting. Additionally, those who perform ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal procedures will find the associated chapter to be an easy guide. The sonographic images of are high quality, and the color anatomic atlas correlates are a nice addition. If there are areas of musculoskeletal sonographic imaging that are being performed that are not covered here, I am not aware of them.
Assessment: This is THE reference for musculoskeletal ultrasound. Dr. Jacobson is a leader in the field and this title provides a thoughtful overview of multiple pathological processes that may be encountered with this modality. This is an adequate study guide, and the easily accessible cine images provide for a real time reference. I don't know of a more in-depth title on this material. This edition provides new protocols, expanded uses, and additional images/cine clips for further reference; definitely an appreciated update.
