Description: This is an update of a consolidated but comprehensive handbook on kidney transplantation last published in 2010. Although it includes an access code for a website with an ebook version that can be uploaded onto several devices, I was unable to access it.
Purpose: The purpose is to make the clinical practice of kidney transplantation fully accessible to all practitioners involved in the care of kidney transplant patients. A strength of the handbook is that it is comprehensive, yet compact enough to fit in the pocket of a white coat. Online access to a reference of this type would be invaluable.
Audience: The audience is all practitioners who participate in the care of kidney transplant patients. While the book would be an appropriate reference for students, the content and level of writing is most appropriate for midlevel, resident, or attending providers. The book meets the needs of this audience.
Features: This is a comprehensive overview of kidney transplantation from A to Z, including pretransplant considerations in the evaluation, care, and workup of patients, through immediate and long-term post-transplant concerns. The book spans the basic science concepts related to immunology and pharmacology to the social and ethical aspects of transplantation. While the operation itself is addressed briefly, the book has a medical focus. The best feature of the book is that it is unique in being compact yet comprehensive. Unfortunately, I was unable to access any of the online material despite several attempts.
Assessment: This is an excellent reference for practitioners who need an overview of kidney transplantation. It is detailed and comprehensive, but approachable and of a great size to carry on the wards. This edition includes updates in the fast evolving areas of transplant pharmacology and immunobiology, as well as controversies regarding organ allocation.
